Medical Review Officer (MRO) Services

MEDGroup recognizes the importance of a sound substance abuse testing policy. We also recognize our responsibility to your company for providing sound substance testing collection procedures, specimen testing and Medical Review Officer (MRO) procedures. It is MEDGroup’s policy to maintain the integrity of the specimen collection and transfer process, while ensuring the dignity and privacy of the donor when collecting a urine specimen. We default to the Department of Transportation (DOT) collection regulations, which are the industry "gold standard" of substance testing.

Urine Drug Testing
MEDGroup utilizes the services of MEDTOX Laboratories for all urine drug screens, unless otherwise specified by a client. MEDTOX is a nationally certified laboratory (DHHS) headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota who is confident in its results and is committed to a high standard of customer service. With MEDTOX, the turnaround time for negative urine drug screen results is typically 24-48 hours. Positive drug screens take additional time for confirmation and the Medical Review Officer (MRO) process.

All MEDGroup urine drug screen collectors are compliant with the DOT’s enhanced urine drug and breath alcohol training requirements as found in 49 CFR Part 40.

Rapid Urine Drug Screen
Through MEDTOX Laboratories, MEDGroup offers its non-federally regulated clients a "rapid" urine drug screen that tests for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and phencyclidine in just five minutes. The rapid tests are performed in any of our four centers and a preliminary result is obtained. If a non-negative result is obtained, the specimen is then sent to the MEDTOX Laboratories where gas chromatography / mass spectrometry confirmation testing occurs.

Breath Alcohol Testing
MEDGroup offers both federally regulated and non-federally regulated breath alcohol tests to its clients. All Breath Alcohol Technicians are trained according to DOT regulations as found in 49 CFR Part 40. Results of breath alcohol tests are reported immediately to the employer as we understand the importance of removing employees from safety-sensitive positions if a test is confirmed as positive.

Hair Testing
MEDGroup provides hair drug testing through Omega Labs, located in Mogadore, Ohio. The hair testing includes marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and phencyclidine, with results typically received within 48-72 hours. All positive hair tests are confirmed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

Urine Drug Testing Collection Site
MEDGroup is available for third party urine drug screen collections. Your employees can arrive at any of our four centers with the appropriate chain of custody forms and testing supplies, and your company or third-party administrator would be billed according to your company’s wishes.

Third-Party Substance Abuse Testing Management
MEDGroup often assists its clients, with multiple locations throughout the country, with their substance abuse testing programs by offering third-party substance abuse testing management services. By identifying third-party collection sites for all of your company’s locations, with centralized reporting by one occupational health provider and Medical Review Officer (MRO), your company insures that the review and interpretation of results is consistent with regulations and will be forensically and scientifically supportable.

Random Substance Abuse Testing Program
MEDGroup offers employers the opportunity to participate in its Random Substance Abuse Testing Program. Employers may participate in the Independent Random Program in which the employer may choose to have their employees randomly selected for urine drug and/or breath alcohol testing on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis. This program is ideal for non-federally regulated employers who maintain a random substance abuse testing policy.

The alternative is the Random Consortium Program for those companies who require federally regulated substance abuse testing programs (DOT). Through the Random Consortium, employees are placed in a "pool" that contains employees from other consortium members/clients, and these random pulls are conducted according to federal guidelines. With the Random Consortium, participating companies receive quarterly and annual reports indicating compliance with the federal regulations.

Medical Review Officer (MRO) Services
MEDGroup has long held the philosophy that the MRO is uniquely important in maintaining the integrity of the drug testing system. Our three Certified Medical Review Officers’ involvement in the review and interpretation of drug screens results is consistent with federal regulations and are forensically and scientifically supportable.
